Q: How do I start looking for fellowships?

Begin here – the Cabot page contains information on the many grants and prizes administered by the Fellowships Office at the Office of Career Services (OCS). The fellowships section of the Cabot site is organized by type of award: i.e. grants to support study abroad; research or personal travel; teaching and public service; funding for college or graduate school; and prizes administered by the college.

But don’t stop here! There are literally hundreds of fellowships and awards available to Harvard students and only a fraction of them are administered by OCS (and therefore can be found on this site). For a (nearly) complete list, go to OCS and read or purchase a copy of the Harvard College Guide to Grants and the Harvard Supplement to the Guide to Grants. Additional information on grants is also available in Section B (Fellowships) in the OCS Reading Room. Applicants for fellowships for travel or study abroad should also consult the resources of Section L (Travel and Work Abroad) and the Annex (Study Abroad and International University Catalogues) in the OCS Reading Room, as well as in relevant sections of the OCS web site. You should also inquire with your academic department about any special or new awards they know of. AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT DATES: The calendar is prepared in advance of the academic year, and changes for individual competitions may occur. Announcements for each fellowship are published in the OCSNews and on the OCS web site and relayed to the Houses and Departments. Be sure to check for any changes in deadlines and procedures.

Q: Where can I get application materials?

Unless otherwise noted, applications are available in the Fellowships Office at OCS, 54 Dunster Street, Room 302.

Q: Are the deadlines flexible?

NO!! OCS will not accept late materials under any circumstances. Unless otherwise noted, all OCS Fellowships Office deadlines are at 12:00 noon on the date listed. All application materials submitted to the Fellowships Office become the property of the Fellowships Office. Once submitted, no materials will be released to applicants. All application materials are considered confidential and treated accordingly.

Q: How can the Cabot Fellowships tutors and OCS help me once I've located an award I want to apply for?

There are several Cabot fellowships tutors, and we can help you in two main ways:

First, each tutor is responsible for a handful of fellowships, awards, and prizes that require either house nomination or house assistance. For a list of the tutors and their particular award responsibilities, see the section of the webpage on the fellowships committee. If you are interested in one of these awards, the tutor associated with the award can answer any questions you have in detail.

Second, we are all here as a general resource for you as you go through the application process for any award. We can give advice about getting letters of recommendation, writing an effective essay, and so forth. Detailed questions about non-OCS administered awards are best directed to the Guide to Grants or to OCS, but the fellowships tutors are happy to help however we can.

The Director of Fellowships, Paul Bohlmann, and the Assistant Directors of Fellowships, Adonica Lui and Greg Llacer, are also available for individual counseling by appointment. To set up an appointment, call OCS at 495-2595 and press “0”; to contact the Fellowships Office directly, call 495-8126. The Fellowships Office staff is generally available for questions on a walk-in basis.

Good luck!!
