Studying in another country
during your time at Harvard can be an immensely rewarding venture.
Traveling to a new place and living there for an extended period of
time--during the summer, semester, or the full year--can afford you
a valuable perspective on your Harvard education and on your life
as a whole.
Studying abroad
at Harvard is a unique challenge; there is a history of administrative
resistance towards time spent in residence elsewhere, not to mention
a mountain of paperwork to get yourself there. Thankfully, Harvard's
attitude towards study abroad has softened; the Core office now offers
one Core exemption (of your choice!) per semester spent studying abroad,
and as of this year, if you are receiving financial aid for regular
term-time study, you are also eligible to apply for assistance for
summer study abroad. And the Office
of International Programs (OIP) has become a great source of information
and help to those people who feel the compulsion to travel and study.
I am one of those people. My name is Chad Alligood,
and I am a senior living in Briggs. I studied abroad in the spring
of '05 in Melbourne, Australia, and during the summer of '05 in Calabria,
Italy. I am the Study Abroad Peer Advisor for Cabot House, and I basically
function as a liaison between the OIP and Cabot. If you have any questions
about any aspect of the study abroad experience, feel free to get
in touch with me (alligood@fas.harvard.edu).
We have several other Cabotians who have studied abroad as well, and
would be more than willing to share their experiences with you.
