Welcome Letter from the Masters

To the Cabot House Community,

As we embark on our third year as masters of Cabot House, we extend the warmest welcome to all students, tutors, and SCR members. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. We hope that the coming academic year will be filled with success and fulfillment for all of you.

A word about ourselves: Cheryl will continue her work as a school psychologist at Sharon (MA) High School; she devotes most of her time there to counseling and testing. She welcomes discussion with those of you who have interests in all areas of special education, special needs, and school psychology; she also welcomes speaking to those of you interested in everything else. Jay, in addition to his teaching in Jewish Studies and Moral Reasoning, directs the Center for Jewish Studies, and is involved in many aspects of the discussion surrounding undergraduate education at Harvard. He hopes you will be willing to share your thoughts on the nature of your academic and non-academic experiences here at Harvard, among many other things. We have three children; only our youngest, David, will be living with us full-time at 107 Walker. The older two will be off at college, and not around much. We all look forward to a great time at Cabot House.

We are lucky to have a truly excellent senior staff, comprised of remarkably dedicated professionals. Stephen Kargere, our Resident Dean, works incredibly hard to serve all your academic and personal needs, while juggling the responsibilities of parenting three young children. Susan Livingston has been a member of the Cabot community for many years as the assistant to the masters, and gives graciously of her knowledge and time, from providing cider and snacks throughout the year, to producing and directing the Cabot House musical, a truly transformative experience for those who participate in it. Susan Bourneuf, the assistant to the Resident Dean, is a consummate professional whom you will find an invaluable resource for many of your academic needs. Finally, even in our relatively brief time as masters, we have come to appreciate the efforts and expertise of Cabot's Building Manager, in supervising the upkeep of such a sprawling space. Those of you who do not yet know them should feel free to come by A-entry and introduce yourselves.

We are lucky to have a wonderful group of dedicated and hard-working tutors; although we will have opportunities to introduce you to them early in the term, please use the facebook and/or this website to familiarize yourselves with their various responsibilities. They are very committed to helping you navigate through the College successfully, so please feel free to approach them to discuss whatever is on your minds. We look forward to working with them to plan events - academic and social - to enrich student life in the House.

With only two years under our belts we continue to have much to learn about serving as Masters of Cabot House. We look forward to continuing and improving the Cabot House film series this year, as well as bringing music and the arts more fully into the life of the house; we also hope to upgrade our exercise facilities this year. But, of course, we cannot do this alone; we very much hope that all of you will share your constructive suggestions about making the House a vital and vibrant community.

Finally, Tim Ledlie ('02) will continue as our webmeister. Please check out the House website, and feel free to approach him, or Antoniu Fantana, our tutor charged with supervising the site, with your ideas; the site exists to serve your needs so do not be shy with constructive suggestions. Make sure to head over to the SCR links; there is much talent in our SCR, and we hope that we will be more successful in making that talent easily accessible to students; we especially encourage all of you to try to participate in SCR events, which is an easy way to interact with all that talent.

With best wishes for a great year,

Cheryl And Jay Harris
